Paradigm framing
The paradigm is Brain-Machine Interfaces (BMIs) for restoration of sensory and motor function and treatment of neurological disorders.
Highlights
This preprint presents incremental advancements within the existing paradigm of BMIs. It focuses on improving the scalability and bandwidth of BMIs by developing novel electrode "threads", a neurosurgical robot for implantation, and custom high-density electronics. While the technology presented is innovative, it does not challenge the fundamental assumptions or methodologies of the field, but rather seeks to improve upon current limitations. This aligns with Kuhn's concept of "normal science," where research efforts are directed towards puzzle-solving within the established paradigm. The development of higher bandwidth BMIs is a recognized goal within the field, and this work contributes towards that goal without proposing a radical shift in understanding or approach.
